Best Antivirus Rescue Disks

Many of the best antivirus providers provide a free bootable recovery disk that can be used to clean your computer after an infected. These are Linux-based programs that can be used to cleanse any computer that is infected by malware if it won’t boot up or cannot be scanned by a standard antivirus program running on Windows. I recommend the Kaspersky disc for its ease of use (though it might not work on some Dell systems).

There are similar features using the Avira or ESET rescue disks, which feature an interface with a graphic design, but require an USB or CD device to boot. Both of these solutions can identify and scan for malware that is on your computer, however their virus definitions aren’t updated as frequently as the Linux-based rescue disks.

The Trend Micro rescue disk is a good alternative and is among the smallest with a size of around 70MB. It doesn’t feature a graphical user interface, however it runs quickly and offers a few customization options including the capability to scan and mount specific drives, files and even specific folders.

The Comodo Rescue Disk is a viable option to run a virus scanner, although it does not have the same flexibility as the Linux-based alternatives. It’s an extremely effective tool for detecting and eliminating the kind of virus that may be hidden in Windows files, preventing detection by the standard antivirus software. You can choose to use either a text-only or full-graphic interface. You can also perform a smart scan, or a custom scan.
