How and when to take prednisolone tablets and liquid

Sometimes steroids can cause another condition known as Cushing’s syndrome. This can cause thinning of the skin, stretch marks, and the face to become rounder, but it usually clears up once steroids are stopped. Steroid treatment can stop the body producing natural hormones, which can be dangerous if you get ill, have an accident or need an operation. Keeping the card with you will help any other doctor who treats you to manage your care correctly.

Steroid cards

They increase the risk of stomach ulcers and internal bleeding. This risk is even greater if you take NSAIDs while you’re also taking steroids. If you do need to take both, your doctor may recommend you also take another medicine called a proton pump inhibitor.

This is an injection or infusion of a steroids into a vein. Intravenous steroids are used for severe flare-ups and can give the quickest response. The instructions may be different for delayed-released oral steroids. This includes budesonide or beclomethasone dipropionate .

If you already have diabetes, you should increase your blood monitoring frequency and inform your GP if you have persistently elevated blood sugars. O You will be prescribed an additional tablet to protect your stomach from acid for the duration of the time you take steroids. If you have not been prescribed this, please check with your GP or specialist nurse. Steroids are drugs that mimic certain natural hormones in the body that regulate and control how the body works and develops.

You may also have heard of anabolic steroids, which are sometimes used without medical advice to increase muscle mass. They are different to the steroids we are talking about on this page. That’s why some people who take steroids go on to develop diabetes. This is known as steroid-induced diabetes, and is more common in people who are at higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

The risk of thinning bones and broken bones is much higher if you take high-dose steroids for more than three months. Your steroid preventer inhaler is unlikely to cause side effects, especially if you’re using your inhaler correctly. Research is ongoing into new treatments for all types of severe asthma.

Some other skin problems, such as rosacea, acne and ulcers, can be made worse by steroid creams so you might not be able to take them if you have any of these conditions. If you have systemic sclerosis, prednisolone could cause problems with your kidneys at certain doses, so you might not be able to take this type of steroid. Usually inflammation is the body’s natural reaction to infection or bacteria. Your immune system produces extra fluid to fight infections or bacteria, which causes swelling, redness and heat in the affected area.
